What is Horizon?

Horizon is a virtual provision where we are all happy and safe, where we develop intellectually, emotionally, physically and spiritually, and where everyone refines their talents and skills allowing them to transition successfully to the next stage of their life.

Horizon Education provides a virtual tutoring service to young people via our Google Classroom system with live lessons taught by a teacher. Additionally, students who are enrolled in this provision will receive an in-person weekly face-to-face well-being session. The provision is targeted to support those students who are unable to attend their main registered school regularly. For some of these students the virtual provision will provide sole subject teaching, for other students their education package will include the provision of alternative provision managed and quality assured by the Academy.

English

The English curriculum at Horizon is designed to cater to students of all abilities. The department prioritizes fostering a love for the subject and aims to provide an engaging and focused learning environment. Students will explore various texts throughout their studies, including fiction, non-fiction, pre-1914 and contemporary literature, poetry, and drama.

At Key Stage 3, the focus is on developing core reading, writing, and speaking & listening skills. Teachers utilize various resources and adapt their approach to suit the needs of individual students. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling (SPaG) are also emphasized to ensure a strong foundation for further studies. Key Stage 4 students will work towards recognized qualifications like GCSEs in English Language and Literature or Functional Skills qualifications. These qualifications prepare students for further education or directly entering the workforce.

Maths

Horizon's Maths program prioritises building a strong foundation in maths through frequent practice and a variety of resources. Their goal is for students to not just memorise answers, but to truly understand concepts and be able to apply them to solve problems. They create a supportive environment where students are challenged but can achieve success, fostering confidence and a love for learning maths. This strong foundation prepares students for their GCSE exams and opens doors to future careers.

The program utilises detailed schemes of learning with various activities and assessments to ensure consistent high-quality lessons. Regular assessments allow students to reflect on their progress and teachers to identify areas needing further development. The curriculum goes beyond just maths skills, incorporating opportunities to explore different career paths and fostering social, moral, spiritual, and cultural development.

These hands-on experiences are designed to be safe for students to replicate at home, fostering a love for scientific exploration beyond the classroom. The curriculum also emphasizes the connections between science and other subjects, helping students see science as an integral part of the world around them. The program supports students in achieving their GCSE in Biology, with opportunities to explore additional Chemistry and Physics depending on their interests.
