Who is the course for?

This course is for anyone that wishes to learn more about animal care and horticulture. This is ideal for someone that wishes to pursue a career with animals or in the horticulture industries, alternatively you may wish to take this course to expand your knowledge and develop the skills required to keep domestic pets.

Studying on a fully equipped small holding, students require no previous experience or skills as they will be taught a full range of skills from the basics to the more advanced that will aid students with a solid foundation in the next steps in their education. Covering a broad selection of topics including Health and Safety in the work place, Animal care and edible gardening, students will be able to take away quality life skills.

What will I learn?

This course is designed to teach students about all aspects of Land based studies from maintaining a small holding equipped with animals to general garden maintenance and landscaping. Students are encouraged to work with the local community on projects and to use the skills they have learnt when doing this. Lessons are hands on and take place on a working small holding. Whether its feeding the goats, collecting eggs from the chickens or planting seeds in the poly tunnel there is always plenty to do!

How will I be assessed?

Students are assessed internally through practical observation tasks evidenced by photographs and witness statements, written assessments and the building of a portfolio. You may also be able to take part in practical placements throughout the course.

What can I do after the course?

  • Specialist courses such as, Animal care, horticulture or agriculture.
  • Gain employment or an apprenticeship in a Land based studies industry area
